April happenings at the California Genealogical Society include a look at Irish names and a special presentation by Frances Kaplan of the California Historical Society, along with our monthly special-interest group meetings and more.

Sat., April 2Intro to Genealogy, our monthly free basics class. This month: Organizing Your Research with Ron Madson.

Sat., April 9: Monthly CGS Board Meeting. All welcome.

Wed., April 13: Members’ Roundtable. A chance to chat with other CGS members, share your research, and ask questions of fellow genealogists. Meets 2nd Wednesday every month. See Special Interest Groups to register.

Sat., April 16: “Searching for Irish Names.” Irish specialist Maureen Hanson discusses the many name variations that can make searching for Irish ancestors tricky, and how to sort them out.

Sat., April 16: Family Tree Maker Special Interest Group with Ron Madson and Karen Halfon.

Wed., April 27: RootsMagic Special Interest Group

Tue., April 26: “Untold Stories from the California Historical Library.” Frances Kaplan, Director of Library and Collections at the California Historical Society, highlights some of the more unusual artifacts, photographs, and manuscripts from the CHS collections that, while not traditionally genealogical materials, reveal untold stories of Californians and their lives.

The National Genealogical Society conference, “Our American Mosaic,” is scheduled May 24-28 in Sacramento. CGS is the local host society! We are pleased to tell you about the CGS members who are among the conference speakers.

MARISA LOUIE LEE specializes in Asian American history and government records. She has worked at the Chinese Historical Society of America and at NARA in San Francisco. Marisa speaks Wednesday, May 25 on “What’s Online at the National Archives and Records Administration?” She joins TRISH HACKETT NICOLA on Friday, May 27 for a two-part presentation, “Researching Chinese American History Using Chinese Exclusion Records.”

MELINDA KASHUBA is a professional genealogist specializing in 19th– to 21st-century California records. Her publications include a book about using maps in genealogy. She speaks Friday, May 27, on “Seeking Maps for Context and Analysis in Urban Genealogical Research”; and Saturday, May 28, on “The California Gold Rush and Beyond: Where Did That Miner Go?”
