Yet another note about Ancestry’s terms of service

Agree/Disagree signs

As mentioned in a previous post, there’s been a lot of buzz in the genealogy world lately over a recent change to the wording of Ancestry.com’s terms of service. Last week, we shared some thoughts by The Legal Genealogist, Judy Russell. In fairness, we should acknowledge there are differences of opinion among respected professionals. Leah LaPerle Larkin (“The DNA Geek”) has a different take on the issue. “Almost none of the discontent on social media right now is about the two words that actually changed,” she writes. “[I]t’s about the fact that Ancestry can use our content in the first place. But they always could!”

She goes on to point out that there are similar clauses in the terms found on sites like MyHeritage, FindMyPast, and FamilySearch. In her opinion, the recent furor is a tempest in a teacup… or, making a mountain out of a molehill.
