On Saturday, October 4, 2025, a number of CGS volunteers consulted with attendees at the Wakamatsu Colony Pilgrimage organized by the Nichi Bei Foundation.

Left to right, they are Sue Logas, Ken and Cindy Brennan, Grant Din, Linda Harms Okazaki, Melinda Yamane Crawford, Joanna Shear, Mary Sayles, and Carolyn WIlliams.

If you are not familiar with the Wakamatsu Farm, it’s an historic farm in Placerville, CA and is the original site of the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Farm Colony that was established in June 1869.  It’s not only the site of the first Japanese colony in the US, but also the birthplace of the first Japanese American.

CGS Members: Projects w/A Life of their Own

Years ago, Cindy Thomson began researching her ancestors who immigrated to Hawaii from Korea in 1904 to work on sugar plantations. After expanding her research to include Japanese, Chinese, German and Portuguese aunties and uncles who married into her family and also had plantation ancestors, she was riveted by the similar and different ways that they experienced Hawaii. To better understand these experiences, she started (and couldn’t stop) reading about Hawaiian history, plantation management, labor unrest, immigration law, and the 16 different racial and ethnic groups who worked on the plantations. This is a story of how historical and cultural context – including interactions between as well as within different immigrant groups – can enrich family history and connect your ancestors to a world beyond family.

When: Saturday, November 8, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Where: Virtually via Zoom
Cost: Free to all

Research Trip to Boston

I’ve been hyping the CGS trip to Boston since I learned about it.  I wish I could go. I already have my vacation planned for 2026 or I would have tried to make this happen.  But since I cannot, I shall live vicariously through all of you!

There have been a couple of great add-ons:

  • The deadline has been extended to November 21, 2025. More time to get your ducks in a row.
  • There is an INFORMATION SESSION!
