In addition to our regular classes and meetings, this month CGS hosts two special workshops on using maps in genealogical research, on September 18 & 25. Instructor Melinda Kashuba specializes in California research from the 19th to the 21st centuries. She holds a PhD in geography from UCLA and is the author of Walking with Your Ancestors: A Genealogist’s Guide to Using Maps and Geography. She is an adjunct lecturer in geography at Shasta College and received the Hayward Award for Excellence in Community College Teaching. The class descriptions are below. Register by clicking the links.
September 18: “Useful Maps for Genealogical Research” highlights several of the most useful types of maps that describe rural and urban locations. Basic map assets such as scale, orientation, dates of publication and data, and authorship will be discussed.
September 25: “Hands-On Map Tools,” is a workshop in which students will learn to create layered historical maps using Google Earth.
A note to readers:
We began offering a weekly roundup of online genealogy events in this blog 18 months ago, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, we all hoped the disruption to in-person gatherings would be more quickly resolved. Clearly, this was not the case. On the bright side, there are now more online genealogy offerings accessible to more people than ever before, and this seems likely to continue in the future. This month, we will retire the weekly roundup and return to our monthly preview of CGS events.
