Saturday, October 5, 11:30 AM–3:30 PM: Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage. As noted in our previous post, CGS volunteers are wanted to help provide “speed genealogy” to visitors at this event hosted by Nichi Bei. The event attracts people with a variety of immigration experiences, especially Japanese Americans; we’ll give you some key websites for Japanese American research that augment your usual sources of basic info. Contact the outreach chair, Grant Din, at [email protected].

Tuesday, October 8, 10 AM–4 PM: Members’ Field Trip to Sutro Library. Located on the San Francisco State University Campus, the Sutro has a large collection of publications and items spanning the 13th to the 21st centuries, and one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S. This event is open to CGS members only. You can join CGS through our website here. To participate in the outing, contact Jane Lindsey before this Friday, October 4th.

Saturday, October 26, 11:30 AM–1 PM: “Heat Up Your Genealogical Research with Fire Insurance Maps.”  Join Melinda Kashuba to learn about the rich resources to be found in fire insurance maps. Maps are invaluable tools not only for locating city addresses but also for uncovering details about the neighborhoods where our ancestors lived, worked, worshipped, attended school, shopped, and spent their leisure time. Live Zoom presentation. Members can view the recording for 30 days on the CGS website.

Other October offerings:

Saturday, Oct. 5, 10 AM: Intro to Genealogy. A series of 4 rotating classes covering the basics of genealogical research. This month: “Using the Census.” Free. NOW hybrid; held both in person at the CGS library and via Zoom.

Wednesday, Oct. 9, 6:30 PM: Members’ Roundtable. Via Zoom. A forum for asking questions about one another’s genealogical research, to learn from others, share research successes, and enjoy a collegial group of individuals interested in learning together. Particularly for new and remote members, this is an opportunity to meet and feel part of the CGS community. Led by Lisa Gorrell and Jacqueline Henderson.
