The California Nugget is out! This issue contains two feature articles about a couple of colorful California characters; information about a little-known San Francisco repository; and tips for organizing your own work.
Barbara Kridl’s article “Man Shoots Wife Five Times” is the dramatic story of Josephine Carantan, a strong-minded French woman who came to northern California in the 1890s. She amassed considerable wealth and property and had several volatile marriages before meeting her untimely end.
In “Barney Sandstrom: Gold Miner, Justice of the Peace, Farmer, and Much More,” Sharon Harris shares her research into one her husband’s ancestors, who ran the Sandstrom Boat Company at the Alameda harbor from the 1920s through the 1940s. His adventurous life included a youth spent at sea, gold mining in Alaska and the Yukon, and playing assorted roles from judge to farmer to inventor to boat builder.
Marcus Flansburg’s article, “The San Francisco Mortuary Records of Valente, Marini, Perata & Co. (1888-2017),” offers a look at a little-known repository for San Francisco records, with step-by-step instructions for accessing them. And our columnist Lisa Gorrell writes about “Creating a Personal Genealogy Education Plan” to organize and further your genealogical pursuits.
