The CGS Outreach Committee seeks to share the knowledge and skills of the CGS board and volunteers with the broader community of both laypersons and genealogists outside CGS.

PurposeThe Outreach Committee seeks opportunities to inform members and non-members about the society and what we offer.

Currently our Vice President, Joanna Shear and our Marketing Chair, Carly Morgan are assisting with outreach activities.

During the heart of the pandemic, we sought to present virtual programs on topics not always included in our more skills-based workshops, in collaboration with CGS’s events committee. These topics have included Brandon Wofford-Asuncion’s presentation on Asian American gravestones, Colleen Robledo Greene speaking about Mexican genealogy, and Jonathan Burgess’s series about African American gold miners including his great-great grandfather. Now that public events are beginning to open up, CGS board and volunteers have participated at the History Fair at the Cameron-Stanford House in Oakland in September, Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage in October, and virtually at the Tadaima virtual pilgrimage program. They have given out information to fair attendees and conducted mini-consultations to help people learn about their immigrant ancestors.

The outreach committee coordinates with the Education and Events Committee, they maintain a speakers list, respond to requests for speakers from CGS, help train and prep speakers as needed and when time allows, they attend events hosted by allied organizations to promote CGS.

The Outreach Committee is looking for new opportunities in 2023 to let more people know about the joys of genealogy! Please contact Grant Din at [email protected] if you know of events that would be interested in genealogists tabling or speaking to youth, seniors, or other diverse cultural groups. If you’d like to volunteer, please also let him know.
