Volunteers needed! “Doors Open,” September 10

by Jennifer Dix (9/1/2023)

For the first time, the California Genealogical Society will this year be a part of Doors Open California, the largest statewide celebration of historic spaces. For only $20, visitors will have access to more than 65 amazing historic places throughout the state on September 9 and 10.

As part of the celebration of the Bay Area, CGS will be open Sunday, September 10, from 11 to 3, and we are especially encouraging attendance by people who haven’t been to our library. It holds over 36,000 items from city directories to original manuscripts, rare maps and more. A more detailed look at our holdings can be found on our website. We are a FamilySearch affiliate library, which means visitors can access many subscription-priced genealogical databases for free at our library. Following the library visit, volunteers from Oakland Heritage Alliance provide information about other area historic buildings including the Fox and Paramount Theaters. Street parking is free on Sundays!

We need volunteers who can give an hour or two on Sunday to greet visitors. (Especially needed are volunteers to fill slots between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) Please consider whether you can help out, and email Grant Din: [email protected].

Lost and Found: Recognize any of these items?

by Jennifer Dix (8/29/2023)

Hats and miscellany lost and found

Among the items left behind by recent visitors to the CGS library are these treasures: a metal travel mug, a pair of Pearl Izumi gloves, three distinctive hats, a thumb drive, and several pairs of sunglasses. If you see something of yours, you can come claim it during library hours Thursday-Saturday. Or email us at [email protected] or call 510-663-1358.
