Remember your childhood days of field trips? Your parent would sign the permission slip and you’d be golden for a day, thinking you got a day off from learning. As adults, though, we now know that is where you learn the MOST!

I highly suggest that you take Linda Harms Okazaki’s lead and take a field trip to the California Genealogical Society library!

If you don’t know Linda, watch our site because you will see some of her lectures and classes noted here. She has one coming up for Family History Month, so stay tuned on the blog this month for more information. She’s a long-time CGS member and speaker and also happens to be amazing.

On September 6, 2025, Linda hosted a field trip to CGS for 20 of the members of her year-long genealogy course. She taught this through the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California and Cindy Thomson gave the tour. Cindy is an expert in records in Hawaii, which was great because eight of the ten attendees had roots in Japanese Hawaii!

So bring some friends, or bring yourself, down to the CGS Library for a field trip. Hint: You can even bring a bagged lunch, just like old times!
