There are a few different popular online certificate programs if you wish to further your education in genealogy. I will discuss the two that I’ve looked into in the past:

Boston University Genealogical Research Certificate Program
There are three courses plus one elective to get your certificate. There is also a Genealogical Practicum Course with its own certificate. You can do one or both of these. The courses are:
1. Genealogical Principles
2. Genealogical Methods and Evidence
3. Genealogical Analysis
4. Elective (choices Professional Genealogy, Forensic Genealogy, and Advanced Writing)

The Practicum course has five research cases and challenges you to do research planning, documentation and analysis on different regions and time periods.

Cost for Boston University at this time is $995 per course. This adds to $3,980 for the Research program and $995 for the Practicum. Next start date is 9/2/2025. For registration and more info: https://genealogyonline.bu.edu/

International Institute of Genealogical Studies
This is a program that I’ve taken several courses in over the years. The classes are relatively inexpensive and can really help in your research, one at a time, or you can combine them into a certificate program. There are 15 methodology courses to take and then you can add courses to lock in a certificate. The online format is super easy to follow and they have so many classes that you will never be bored!

Here are the classes I’ve personally taken:
• US Land Records
• Connecting Family: Online and Virtually
• Methodology- Getting Started
• Methodology- Organization and Skill-Building
• Electronic Resources- Using the Internet
• Social Media for the Wise Genealogist

Each class is $119, which, if you want the American Records PLCGS Certificate, adds to $4,893.00 total. For more information, you can visit their site here: https://genealogicalstudies.com
